INSURER REMINDS BUSINESS LEADERS ABOUT THE NEW ENVIRONMENTAL LAW

20/04/08

Allianz Insurance is reminding businesses of the need to comply
with the new Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations which
come into force on 6 April 2008. Failure to comply with the new regulations could hit businesses directly in the pocket.

The legislation requires every commercial property owner, landlord
or property manager to obtain an energy performance certificate
for construction, sale or leased commercial property. Businesses
face a penalty charge of up to £5000 if the regulations are
breached. The new law will be enforced by Trading Standards
for existing buildings, while for newly constructed buildings enforcement will be under building control regulations.

Neil Clutterbuck, Director, Allianz Engineering, said: “The overall
cost to businesses, Landlords and even property managers in the
UK could be significant if they fail to comply with the law.”

The legislation also requires that public buildings display energy certificates from October 2008, in a place clearly visible to the
public. Measures are also being introduced to ensure that
air-conditioning systems are regularly inspected.
